Olympic Gold and Silver Rematch Takes the Ring at The Prefontaine Classic
Women’s Hammer Throw added as non-Diamond discipline
The Women’s Hammer Throw has been added to the 50th edition of The Prefontaine Classic and will feature both Olympic gold medalist Camryn Rogers and Olympic silver medalist Annette Echikunwoke.
In addition to her Olympic gold medal from Paris with a 76.97-meter throw, Pre Classic fans will remember Camryn Rogers (CAN) from her 2024 Pre Classic victory in the Women’s Hammer Throw. Her 77.76m (255' 1") performance was both a Pre Classic record and Wanda Diamond League record. Representing Canada, Rogers threw 77.22m (253' 4") to take home gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships Budapest 23. This came one year after her silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships Oregon 22, set at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Camryn won two NCAA Outdoor titles in the Women’s Hammer Throw at Hayward Field (2021 & 2022) while competing for the University of California, Berkeley. Rogers is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in the Women’s Hammer Throw and has a personal best of 78.62m (257' 11") in the event.
Rogers will be joined by fellow Olympic medalist Annette Echikunwoke (NGR & USA), who brought home silver from Paris with a 75.48m (247’ 7”) throw this past summer while representing the United States. A two-time national champion, Echikunwoke is currently ranked third in the world in the Women’s Hammer Throw. She has a personal best throw of 75.49m (247’ 8”), a Nigerian national and African area record, set in 2021. Echikunwoke won the 2017 NCAA Indoor title in the Women’s Weight Throw while representing the University of Cincinnati.
The Women’s Hammer Throw will be contested as a non-Diamond discipline at the 2025 Prefontaine Classic.
The 50th edition of The Prefontaine Classic will be held on Saturday, July 5 at Hayward Field. Tickets start at just $25 and may be purchased at here. Lexus Legacy Experience VIP packages, which can be purchased in addition to an event ticket, are on sale now.
